Fabric Care

You'll find everything you need to know about any of the fabrics I use to make my bathroom-friendly jumpsuits on this page. If there is anything missing, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Some general care tips:

  • Wherever possible, keep the zips closed. Wash your jumpsuit with the zips closed and don't leave them open when it's not being worn
  • The zips are fragile, please be careful when you do them up/undo them
  • The buttons do not like being soaked in water :) they are made from nuts, afterall!

Black TENCEL™ Lyocell Twill

MeetMILK Black TENCEL™ Twill - Leim bathroom-friendly jumpsuits

Where is the fabric from?

The black TENCEL™ twill I use is from MeetMILK (a We Do Fabric brand). It is a 213gsm fabric made from 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell from certified and protected forests. It has OEKOTEX standard 100 certification and the fibres are LENZING™ TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers. It has a lovely handfeel, like silk but heavier - MeetMILK describe it as 'like milk' (hence the name) and I have to agree. It has a semi-matt surface and a smooth and weighty drape, making it perfect for my jumpsuit styles.

How to wash this fabric

You can machine wash your jumpsuit on a delicate/handwash (something with a low spin speed - if you can have no spin on your machine, choose that!) cycle at 30°C using a mild, delicate detergent.

If you live in an area of hard water, be careful with machine washing - soak it in water before you put in the washing machine and then remove it from the washing machine immediately, don't let it sit in the drum. Use the lowest spin speed you possibly can. I have found that hard water can leave white marks on the fabric if not properly cared for.

I would also recommend spot washing where you can, instead of washing the whole jumpsuit. If you gently rub a clean part of the fabric on a mark, you can sometimes remove the mark without needing to wash your jumpsuit!

How to care for this fabric

Once you have washed your jumpsuit, either hang it or lie it flat to dry.

Do not tumble dry.

Hang your jumpsuit when you can - this will help wrinkles to drop out.

You can iron on a medium setting and use a steam setting to remove stubborn wrinkles.

Why I chose this fabric

This twill can be a little slippy to work with, but the end look more than makes up for it - I use lots of pins when I sew! I just love how it is so comfortable to wear and soft against the skin, but looks pulled together (even without ironing between wears).

It's a really versatile colour, can be a little 'dusty' in appearance so I find marks don't show up so obviously. Very wearable!

Zebra Print Cotton Denim

Where is the fabric from?

The zebra print cotton denim is from Mind The Maker (a We Do Fabric brand). It is a 325gsm (9.7oz, medium weight) denim fabric made from 98% Cotton, 2% Elastane. It is certified OEKOTEX standard 100.

How to wash this fabric

The fabric will soften after the first wash, and darken slightly but there may be slight shrinkage. Please let me know if you have long legs, I can add extra length to the trousers for you.

To protect the fabric, I recommend handwashing (literally handwashing) the first 2-3 washes. Fill the bath, sink or a bucket with warm water and a small amount of detergent. Gently soak the jumpsuit in the water, carefully massaging any marks. Rinse 2-3 times with clean water. Then hang your jumpsuit to dry (in the shower, maybe!). Do not wring your jumpsuit out.

After this,  you can machine wash your jumpsuit on a delicate/handwash (something with a low spin speed) cycle at 30°C using a mild, delicate detergent.

Always choose a machine cycle with a low spin speed (ideally no spin).

Why I chose this fabric

I just think that pattern is so fun! I'm a big fan of a denim jumpsuit - they give me a dungaree feel which I can't get over.

Normally I would avoid anything with elastane content but I felt the 2% would add a little comfort in the crotch that a 100% cotton denim doesn't give.

Yellow Rib Knit

Where is the fabric from?

The yellow rib knit is from MeetMILK (a We Do Fabric brand). It is a lighter 175gsm knitted lyocell/cotton mix, made from 67% TENCEL™ Lyocell, 33% Cotton. It is certified OEKOTEX standard 100, the TENCEL™ is LENZING™ TENCEL™ Lyocell fibre and the cotton is GOTS certified organic.

Why I chose this fabric

If you ask anyone who knows me, you'll know that I prioritise softness wherever I can. I think it could be a sensory thing, but I prefer to always be cozy. This fabric is the peak of softness for me, with a little cotton for stability.

A cozy, very wearable fabric that is a bright, summery colour!

Lilac/Red Block Print Cotton

Where is the fabric from?

I know very little about this fabric because it's deadstock, but I fell in love with the print immediately. I do know that it is 100% cotton and 110gsm weight - so very light and floaty!

Because of the delicate nature of block printing, the pattern will fade with heavy washing. So I recommend minimal washing, short cycle times and avoid soaking.

Why I chose this fabric

I just absolutely fell in love with the combination of lilac and red in this block print. I think it's so fun! I also love breathable natural fibres (like cotton) throughout the year because, come rain or shine, I am a sweaty gal.

The lilac stripes are approximately 5m long, fyi.

Ivory Bamboo Silk

Where is the fabric from?

This fabric is from the Organic Textile Company, based in Somerset in the U.K. It's a 130gsm, natural, matt-look vegan silk, made from bamboo fibres. The bamboo was grown in Sichuan, sourced from sustainably managed forests (FSC certified) and the fabric was manufactured in Hebei, both China. It has OCIA (or NOP for USA) certification and is OEKOTEX Standard 100.

Why I chose this fabric

This is the perfect fabric for a jumpsuit - silky and floaty but with enough weight to support the zips. I also love how it's not very shiny and machine washable - unlike normal silk.

Bamboo is a pretty cool fibre too. It is manufactured from 2-3 year old bamboo plants in an environmentally friendly closed loop system.  Bamboo is a breathable and naturally antibacterial fabric.

It's also a beautiful vegan alternative to silk - traditional silk is made from the silkworm cocoons of the silk moth. Typically the silkworms are boiled inside the cocoons when they are harvested, making it pretty unfriendly to animals :(

Rust TENCEL™ Jacquard Twill

Where is the fabric from?

This fabric is from MeetMILK (a We Do Fabrics brand) and is a 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell. It's 205gsm so a really lovely weight for my jumpsuits. The fibres are LENZING™ TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres (so made from sustainably forested wood pulp) and it is certified according to OEKOTEX standard 100.

How to wash this fabric

I recommend soaking your jumpsuit before washing, to avoid white marks forming as it dries. Soak it well in water, do not wring or squeeze the water out.

Then, you can machine wash your jumpsuit on a delicate/handwash (something with a low spin speed) cycle at 30°C using a mild, delicate detergent.

Remove it from the washing machine immediately, don't let it sit in the drum!

Always choose a machine cycle with a low spin speed (ideally no spin).

Why I chose this fabric

Ahhh dreamy, silky TENCEL™ fibres with a nice weight that I can still wear them in winter. I love the warm tone of this fabric and the jacquard gives a lovely impression of (almost) water when you walk. Comfortable but also (because it's TENCEL™) it still has a 'pulled together' feeling that makes me feel smart enough for work or nice parties.

I can get other colours of this fabric, if you like the style but not the colour!

Mustard Gingham Linen

Where is the fabric from?

This mini-gingham linen is from Merchant and Mills. Its 185gsm so a really decent weight that feels gorgeous against your skin (it's pre-washed at the mill, for softness). It's a 100% linen, one of the most sustainable fabrics you can wear.

I love linen in the winter, as well as the summer. Because of the previously mentioned sweat-issue, it's my best fabric friend! Cooling in the summer, warm in the winter.

How to wash this fabric

You can machine wash your jumpsuit on a delicate/handwash (something with a low spin speed) cycle at 30°C using a mild, delicate detergent.

Remove it from the washing machine immediately, don't let it sit in the drum!

I would also recommend spot washing where you can, instead of washing the whole jumpsuit. If you gently rub a clean part of the fabric on a mark, you can sometimes remove the mark without needing to wash your jumpsuit!

Linen doesn't need to be washed that often - the colour will soften (as will the fabric, it 'relaxes') with time and more washing, so bear that in mind!

How to care for this fabric

Once you have washed your jumpsuit, either hang it or lie it flat to dry.

Do not tumble dry.

Hang your jumpsuit when you can - this will help wrinkles to drop out.

You can iron on a medium to hot setting and use a steam setting to remove stubborn wrinkles.

Why I chose this fabric

I love linen so much.

Linen is made from flax, a strong plant best grown in northern Europe. It needs little to no fertilisers and due to the local climate, little extra water.

The Advisory Commission Report to the European Parliament stated that flax cultivation has positive effects on eco-system diversity as it allows for an “environmental pause”. One hectare of flax can retain 3.7 tonnes of CO2. Every part of the plant is used, what isn’t used to produce linen can be used to make linseed oil, paper, cattle feed or even soap.

It also doesn’t always require the use of pesticides as it can grow in poor quality soil. Linen is therefore almost naturally organic. It is completely biodegradable, recyclable and due to its natural absorbency, it requires less dye than cotton. This means that linen scores high on the ecological chart.

The fabric was made by a mill which uses electricity supplied solely from renewable energy sources and is OEKO Tex certified.

Magenta Spot Viscose/Silk

Where is the fabric from?

Another deadstock fabric that I just had to buy. It is either a viscose or silk, so you must treat it with some respect! I bought the fabric from New Craft House in London, U.K.

It's semi-sheer so can either be lined or left unlined (could be a bit sexy, with a black bra underneath!).

How to wash this fabric

Because I don't know what this fabric is made from, I'm going to recommend either dry cleaning (sorry) or handwashing yourself.

Fill the bath, sink or a bucket with warm water and a small amount of detergent. Gently soak the jumpsuit in the water, carefully massaging any marks with your fingers. Rinse 2-3 times with clean water. Then hang your jumpsuit to dry (in the shower, maybe!). Do not wring or squeeze the water out of your jumpsuit.

How to care for this fabric

Once you have washed your jumpsuit, either hang it or lie it flat to dry.

Do not tumble dry.

Hang your jumpsuit when you can - this will help wrinkles to drop out.

You can iron on a low setting and use a little steam setting to remove stubborn wrinkles - treat it like silk!

Why I chose this fabric

I'm not sure I need to explain this one - it's just so fun! The brightly coloured, organically shaped spots, combined with the white backing make it colourful but not too... much?

Because the spots are a jacquard (so the pattern is woven into the fabric rather than printed on top) the underside still has the 'tufts' from where the fibres were cut. If you like this style, I can sew the fabric with the tufts showing on the outside - a fun textural surprise!

About The Buttons

The buttons are made from corozo nuts (Palm Ivory - don’t worry, it’s vegan!) and are from Courtney & Co. - the last buttonmaker left in the U.K.

For some of my jumpsuits, they are left the beautiful natural colour of the corozo. You may be able to see some of the pattina from where the nut is moulded!

For others, they are dyed to black, navy blue or a deep petrol blue. The dyeing is OEKO TEX certified.

About The Zips

Unfortunately not everything can be sustainable!

My zips are (mostly) from YKK - the best zips money can buy. I have tested using other brands but often these have questionable durability. It does mean I am limited to less precise colour matches, but you see so little of the zip that I feel it's a reasonable trade off.

The zips are manufactured in Italy and are 100% polyester (the tape), 100% plastic (the teeth) and have a metal pull.

When I rule the jumpsuit world and can order a larger quantity of zips, I will be able to order from YKK's recycled options. Currently those minimums are too high for me and it wouldn't be worth the carbon footprint shipping them here (they are shipped directly from Japan.)
